Note that there are two words “vol”. Meaning “theft” or “flight”.
In the same way, you have “voler” = “to steel” and “voler = to fly”.
Like in English, " être" and "avoir" are two very important verbs. They are used in their meanings and as auxiliaries in different tenses. But let’s see the personal pronouns first.
Grammar / Grammaire
Negation
Negation in French is expressed by the construction “ne… pas”. “Ne” comes before the verb and “pas” after. In composed tenses (with auxiliaries), it will come before and after the auxiliary.
You also have other negative forms with different meanings:
ne… plus = not anymore
ne… jamais = never
ne… rien = nothing
ne… personne = nobody
For phonetics, you will replace the ending –e of “ne” with an apostrophe before verbs starting with a vowel.
Je n’ai pas
Il n’est pas
Note that in spoken speech, French often drop the “ne”.
Question
Question is a different mater. It has got several forms more or less formal. The formal and usual written form is the verb-pronoun inversion.
Êtes-vous Anne ? As-tu faim ? Anne a-t-elle froid ? N’avez-vous pas peur ?
The inversion in composed tenses (with auxiliary) will be done with the pronoun and the auxiliary.
The less formal and usual spoken forms are:
1. The positive form with question mark and the appropriate intonation:
Vous êtes Anne ? tu as faim ? Elle a froid Anne ? Vous n’avez pas peur ?
2. The use of the construction “est-ce que”, with positive questions only:
Est-ce que vous êtes Anne ? Est-ce que tu as faim ? Est-ce que Anne a froid ?
Questions Words
As in English, you have question words. In a formal speech they will be placed at the beginning of the sentence. In a less formal way, they will be at the end or with the construction “est-ce que”.
qui ? = who?
quoi ? que… ? = what?
